This venue is a treasure house of Welsh culture and heritage. The Reception will be held in the Grand Hall which is a grand and opulent setting. There will be the opportunity to browse through the galleries, which house the Davies Collection of French Impressionist Art with works by Monet, Renoir and Van Gogh. There will be time to spend experiencing fine art amongst colleagues. The Reception will finish in time to give guests the chance to have dinner at one of Cardiff's many excellent restaurants.

NAMED LECTURES - BACKGROUND

THE GARROD LECTURE - Professor B Wiedemann, Bonn, Germany
This annual lecture, sponsored by the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, was inaugurated in 1982 and named after L P Garrod (1896 - 1979) whose influence on antimicrobial chemotherapy was so important in the development of the discipline, and whose clinical approach based on meticulous laboratory work, is in keeping with the ethos of the Society. The lecture is always given by an international authority on chemotherapy.

THE LOWBURY LECTURE - Professor John Pearman, Perth, Australia
The annual Lowbury Lecture sponsored by the Hospital Infection Society was instituted in 1980, in recognition to Professor Edmund Joseph Lister Lowbury's long and outstanding pioneering work on infection control matters.
Professor Lowbury is the doyen of modern hospital infection control having been the first honorary Director of the Hospital Infection Research Laboratory in 1964. In addition to his extensive scientific body of over 250 publications, Professor Lowbury is also recognised in literary circles as an outstanding poet, and his bound book of poems is traditionally given to the Lowbury Lecturer as a momento of the occasion.

THE BARNETT CHRISTIE LECTURE - Guy Thwaites, Brighton
Barnett Christie was an eminent Infectious Disease physician and author, who is honoured annually by the British Infection Society with a lecture delivered by a young investigator in Infectious Diseases and Microbiology who has won the annual Barnett Christie prize.

THE JD WILLIAMS LECTURE – Dr Martin Maiden, Oxford
This year the JD Williams Lecturer is Martin Maiden from Oxford, the latest annual lecture in recognition of the work of Professor JD Williams. This Lecture was first given by Professor JD Williams in 1998. The Lecture is sponsored by the Association of Medical Microbiologists (AMM).
